Bait and Switch

by Kevin on Tuesday, August 1 at 11:09 PM GMT-4

Things never go quite as you expect when you plan things out in fine detail.

We had an apartment lined up in Halifax finally to be able to move down (and end my hour long commute every day finally). I had viewed not this apartment but another apartment in the building. It was great, everything was new. I was told that the other apartment would be vacated and completely renovated to the same look and feel of the place I was viewing. We took the place considering the price and location.

Rented a van, packed the cats in for the 3 hour drive and was ready to pick up the keys...

Cept, the place wasn't the same at all. Everything was old, stained and crummy. This was not the same as promised at all. In all fairness, they weren't finished with some of the work, but they weren't intending to fix the major problems anyway. After some discussion with the property management company, it was decided they didn't want to fix the place, and we didn't want it anyway.

At least we managed to find a new place, but the poor cats didn't enjoy a 3 hour drive turning into a 6 hour adventure.

Thanks a lot Trans Globe....

The exact same thing happened to me! Now I am stuck in a crummy, hot, gross sub-ground level apartment on the street. It sucks, but my year lease is almost up! Did I mention I have ants living in my window frame of my bedroom, and I have never been able to buzz anyone in, I always have to go out and open the door. The shower unit was supposed to be replaced right after I moved in and was never done. The carpet is stained, and their fix for the leak in the wall in the bathroom involved caking on wall compond the day I moved in. Parking is included.

Yea that was what I was worried would happen with this place. Plus, they weren't willing to do the major fixes anyway (like removing all the grubby carpet and putting in the laminate like they showed me), refinishing the cupboards in the kitchen, replacing the countertops in kitichen / bathroom. It sounds like I was being picky, but when you are shown an almost model apartment and then get a dump, well, no thanks.

Hopefully it wasn't the same company? Wait, I guess it would be preferred if it was so people could just avoid one sleezy property management company...

Sorry about that Kevin. Shitty deal. Mike, nothing gets a landlord moving like withholding rent. If you have promises in writing for repairs, or there are obvious things that need replacing, withold the funds - or just threaten to. It works.
